Greece Marriage License in Monroe County

Marriage licenses in Greece are filed through Monroe County. The Greece Town Clerk issues marriage licenses, but any town or city clerk in Monroe County can do the same thing. The Monroe County Clerk's office handles land records and court filings but does not process marriage licenses. That job falls to the local town and city clerks.

Under DRL Section 13, any couple can get a marriage license from any clerk's office in New York State. You do not need to live in Greece or Monroe County. The City of Rochester, which borders Greece to the south, also has a clerk's office that processes marriage licenses. The Rochester City Clerk's marriage license page lists hours and requirements if you want to apply there instead.

After Your Greece Wedding Ceremony

The officiant must return the signed marriage license to the Greece Town Clerk within five days of the wedding. The officiant, both spouses, and at least one witness all sign at the ceremony. Per DRL Section 14, the clerk fills out the license and hands it to the couple, who give it to their officiant for the big day.

Section 11 of the Domestic Relations Law lists who can perform a marriage in New York. Judges, mayors, ordained clergy, and one-day marriage officers all qualify. After the officiant sends the signed license back to the Greece Town Clerk, the clerk files it with the state. You should get a Certificate of Marriage Registration in the mail within about 20 days. That certificate is your official proof the marriage is on file.

Rochester also offers civil marriage ceremonies through its city clerk for a $75 fee, which is an option for Greece-area couples who want a simple courthouse wedding followed by their own reception. The ceremony can take place at Rochester City Hall during business hours.
