Wyoming County Marriage Ceremony Options
After you get your marriage license from a Wyoming County town clerk, you can hold the ceremony anywhere in New York State. Many couples choose outdoor venues in the rolling hills and farmland of the county. The license does not tie you to the town where you got it. Under Section 11 of the Domestic Relations Law, judges, justices, mayors, ordained clergy, and appointed marriage officers can all perform the ceremony. No particular form or wording is required, but both parties must state that they take each other as their spouse in front of the officiant and at least one witness.
The officiant must return the signed marriage license to the issuing clerk within five business days after the wedding. The clerk files it with the New York State Department of Health. Your Certificate of Marriage Registration then arrives by mail in about two to four weeks. This certificate is your proof that the marriage is on record with the state. It lists the date, time, location, and the officiant's name and title. If it does not arrive in four weeks, call the town clerk who issued your license.
Note: There is no minimum age for a wedding witness, but pick someone who could testify in court about what they saw.
