How to Get a North Hempstead Marriage License

Regular hours for marriage licenses are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Extended Wednesday evening hours from 4:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. may be available at the office's discretion and only by appointment.
Both partners must appear in person. You cannot send a representative, even one with power of attorney. Notarized affidavits cannot be used in place of showing up. Bring one current photo ID such as a driver's license, passport, or state-issued non-driver ID. Expired documents are not accepted. You also need proof of age and identity. All foreign documents not in English must come with an official certified translation from a translation service, consulate, embassy, or university. The original documents must be submitted with the translation.
If you were married before, provide details on all previous marriages in the application. Bring a certified copy of your last divorce decree with official seal, or a Certificate of Dissolution of Marriage. If widowed, bring a certified death certificate. Divorce papers in a foreign language need official certified translations too.
The fee is $40. The office accepts cash, money order, check, or credit card. If paying cash, bring the exact amount because the office cannot make change. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Town of North Hempstead. Credit card payments carry a 2.95% service fee. After the clerk issues your license, a 24-hour waiting period starts per DRL Section 13-b. The license is valid for 60 days.

North Hempstead Marriage License Requirements
Both applicants must be at least 18 years old. If either applicant is 17, they need written consent from both parents and approval from a Supreme Court Justice or Family Court Judge with jurisdiction over the area. No one under 17 can get a marriage license. No blood test or medical exam is needed in New York State.
The Marriage Equality Law, passed in June 2011 and signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, went into effect on July 24, 2011. The North Hempstead Town Clerk issues marriage licenses to same-sex couples under the same rules and fees as all other couples. Per DRL Section 14, the clerk fills out the license and gives it to the couple after they complete the application and pay the fee.

North Hempstead Marriage License Copies
A certified copy of a marriage record from North Hempstead costs $10 from the town clerk. For in-person requests, bring your photo ID. Mail requests should include both spouses' names, the marriage date, and a check for $10. Village clerks in some communities like Manorhaven note that the Mayor or Village Clerk can perform marriage ceremonies, but you must first get your license from the Town of North Hempstead.
The New York State Department of Health also provides certified copies for $30 each with 10 to 12 weeks of processing. Under Section 11 of the Domestic Relations Law, judges, mayors, ordained clergy, and appointed officers can all perform your ceremony. After the wedding, the officiant returns the signed license to the clerk within five days. You get a Certificate of Marriage Registration in the mail within a few weeks.
