Auburn City Clerk Marriage License

The City of Auburn City Clerk is at Memorial City Hall, 24 South Street, Auburn, NY 13021. Phone: (315) 255-4100. Appointments are required to get a new marriage license. Both applicants must show up in person together. Bring a birth certificate and a valid photo ID. If either person was married before, bring the divorce decree or death certificate. The fee is $40.

Under DRL Section 14, the town or city clerk fills out the marriage license and issues it to the couple. After the license is issued, you wait 24 hours before the ceremony can take place. The license is good for 60 days. You can marry anywhere in New York State with it. After the officiant performs the wedding and the signed license comes back to the clerk, you get one copy of the Marriage Certificate by mail. If you lose it or need extras, you can buy an official Marriage Transcript from the clerk.

The birth certificate you bring must include the full names of your parents. That is a state requirement. No blood test is needed. Both applicants must be at least 18 years old. The Cayuga County Clerk's website has more info on county services and records access.

You can apply at any town or city clerk in New York State. In Cayuga County, besides Auburn, town clerks in Ledyard, Sennett, Moravia, Weedsport, and other towns issue marriage licenses. The Town of Ledyard clerk spells out the process clearly: the fee is $40, which includes your marriage certificate. Bring a birth certificate, photo ID, and copies of all divorce decrees or death certificates for prior marriages. Per DRL Section 13-b, the waiting period is 24 hours. The license expires after 60 days.

Any person authorized under Section 11 of the Domestic Relations Law can perform your wedding. That includes judges, town justices, mayors of cities and villages, ordained clergy, and marriage officers appointed by the town board. The officiant signs the license after the ceremony and must return it to the issuing clerk within five days. About two to four weeks after that, you get your Certificate of Marriage Registration in the mail.

Note: Couples who do not get their certificate within four weeks should call the clerk who issued the license.

Copies of Cayuga County Marriage Records

Certified copies cost $10 from the town or city clerk who issued the license. You can also request a copy from the NYS Department of Health for $30 each. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
