How to Get a Marriage License in Warren County
Go to any town clerk in Warren County with your partner. Queensbury is the largest town in the county and its clerk handles many license applications. You do not have to live in Warren County or get married here. The license works anywhere in New York State. Warren County is a top wedding spot because of Lake George, the Adirondack mountains, and the many scenic venues along the lake.
Both of you fill out the application together. The clerk needs your full names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers. Each of you shows proof of age and a photo ID. The process takes about 20 to 30 minutes. DRL Section 14 tells the clerk what to include on the form. After the license is issued, wait 24 hours. A judge can waive this if needed. The license stays valid for 60 days, or 180 days for active military members.
A marriage between an ancestor and descendant, between siblings, or between an uncle and niece or an aunt and nephew is not allowed in New York State. This applies to both full and half blood relatives. The clerk checks for these restrictions during the application process. Under Section 11 of the Domestic Relations Law, judges, clergy, mayors, and appointed officiants can all perform the ceremony.

Warren County Marriage License Copies
A certified copy costs $10 from the town clerk who issued the license. The New York State Department of Health charges $30 with 10 to 12 weeks processing. Priority handling adds $15 for about two weeks turnaround. Rush service through VitalChek is faster but costs more.
Only the bride or groom can request a certified copy of a recent marriage record. Records more than 50 years old with both spouses deceased are available for genealogy. The NYS DOH genealogy section handles older record requests at a base fee of $22.
Warren County Marriage Records History
Vital records in New York State started in 1881. The New York State Archives holds microfiche indexes to marriage records from that year forward. The Crandall Public Library at 251 Glen Street in Glens Falls, NY 12801 has copies of these microfiche indexes. Call (518) 792-6508 for hours and access details. This is a convenient option for Warren County residents who want to look up marriage records without traveling to Albany.
The New York State Library also has genealogy resources and vital records information. For Warren County specifically, older records stay with the town clerk who filed them. The County Clerk may hold some marriage records from 1908 to 1935 as part of the state's historical filing system. Processing a genealogy request through the state takes eight months or longer, so the local clerk is usually faster.
Note: Marriage indexes are made available after 50 years per state policy.
Name Change on a Warren County Marriage License
Neither spouse is required to change their last name after marriage. It does not happen automatically. But if you want to change your surname, you can enter the new name on the marriage license application. Your options include taking the other spouse's name, going back to a former surname, combining both names into one, or using a hyphenated version. The name change takes legal effect at the end of the ceremony. You do not need a separate court order for this kind of change.
If you skip the name change option on the application, you would have to go through the courts later or remarry to make it happen through the marriage process. Many Warren County couples find it easier to decide on the name change before their appointment with the town clerk. The clerk records the new name on the license form, and it becomes part of the official state record after filing.
