Marriage License Ceremony Rules in Huntington
After the wedding, the officiant must return the signed license to the Huntington Town Clerk within five days. Both spouses, the officiant, and at least one witness sign the license at the ceremony. Per DRL Section 14, the clerk fills out the form and hands it to the couple, who give it to their officiant.
The Huntington Town Code gives the Town Clerk broad powers over license and permit administration. This includes the ability to issue one-day marriage officiant licenses. Under Section 11 of the Domestic Relations Law, judges, mayors, clergy, and specially appointed officiants can all perform ceremonies. Huntington's town clerk office manages the paperwork for these one-day designations, which are valid only for the specific couple named on the application. The one-day license expires when the marriage license itself expires or when the ceremony is done, whichever comes first.
Once the officiant returns the signed license, the clerk files it with New York State. You should get a Certificate of Marriage Registration by mail within about 20 days. That certificate is your proof the marriage is on file.
